Witnesses statements include:

About the 21st of July, I missed some cotton when the policeman came on the Friday following—I do not know when it was taken—it was taken from the door—the officer showed me a piece of printed cotton—(produced)—this is it—it is my master's.

Ann Chapman was found guilty and transported for seven years.
      On 30 March 1844 he was tried at the Sussex County Assizes, for Larceny by Servant, sentenced to 6mths imprisonment.

He had been listed in the Ipswich Gaol receiving book 21 March 1844 listed at Henry Baptist Glanville last residence Woodbridge, a Linen Draper, trade learnt from Chas Carter of Hoxton.
He was recorded:
Age 20, Height 5. 10 1/4, Complexion Dark, Hair Brown, Eyes Hazel, Visage Long, Scra on the front of forehead, in posession of 6s 6d.
His religion was Dissenter, place of nativity Newport, father Willm Glanville Baptis Preacher Otley, unmarried.
Charged with Stealing from the Shop a pair of White Kid Glover, 14 pieces of Tape, 6 1/2 years of Black Lute String, 7 yards of fancy Muslin 5 pair of Black Worsted Stockings and a variety of other articles.
Not been in custody before. Can read and write. Schooled at Wantage Berks for 5 or 6 years.
Committed at Woodbridge, arrested 20 March 1844 to be tried at Assisze at Bury 30 March, sentence 6 calendar months.
