The passengers had to walk along a narrow plank from the steamer to the shore, she tripped on the plank and would have fallen into the water had not William Martin caught her and helped her to safety. He declared that he fell in love with her at that moment, certainly it was a very short time afterwards in the same year that they married. She was only 17 years of age."
