Entry from Globe and Laurel January/February 1985

LIEUTENANT TERENCE VICTOR GLANVILLE RM
Terry Glanville was a gentle giant with a strong personality who commanded respect throughout his career. He was a highly motivated officer, totally dedicated to the Royal Marines and had established himself in 40 Commando as a conscientious, caring Imprest Holder. A brilliant career in the Signals Branch was followed by a very successful six years as an SD officer; experienced, meticulous, a sound manager, but above all a humane person who always found time to listen.
Terry joined the Corps as a Junior Marine on 2 January 1961, and after a spell in 43 Commando, qualified as an S3. He immediately made his mark as an above average operator in HMS Tartar for 18 months before a commission in 43 Commando and his Junior Command Course. Later in 40 Commando in Borneo he was outstanding as a signals detachment JNCO and a very strong, jungle 'yomper', although trail-blazer was the cliche of the day. From those early impressions, Terry progressed successfully through the signals branch to Colour Sergeant.

In March 1979, Terry was commissioned and appointed to DRORM as the Corps Casualty Officer where his dedication, caring and sensible approach to the job was greatly appreciated. His next appointment was to RMR Tyne as the Admin Officer, he having already served as a PSI at RMR Merseyside as a Sergeant. He will be sadly missed throughout the RMR. He was a tall, imposing figure who was respected by all reservists but they soon came to know him as a most considerate and unselfish person who would go to infinite trouble to ensure the efficiency of the Unit, but cared even more for the welfare of his men. As a friend and messmate he will be remembered for his slow smile and subtle sense of humourand the tremendous support he gave to every event both in preparationand enjoying the party.

Throughout his career he had been an active sportsman particularly in rugby, hockey and volleyball, the latter in which he became a coach. In addition to career courses and sporting achievements, Terry had a very capable and active brain, which was put to good use as a Sgt (Sl) at Merseyside when he successfully completed a two years HNC business studies course.
A friend and colleague of many year's standing, the presence of this splendid 'son of Somerset' will be sadly missed by 40 Commando and all the officers, SNCOs and men of the Corps who were fortunate enough to know him. Our thoughts, prayers and sympathy are extended to Andrea and her three young children during this distressing time.
