John Patrick Glanville began military service on 31 July 1899 in Colchester, ESS, ENG, joining the Royal Warwickshire Regt at Colchester 9 Aug 1899. Recorded age 20yrs 2mnths, height 5ft 6 1/4 inch, 136 lbs, 34.5in expanded chest, Roman Catholic, enlisting for 7 years and then 5years in reserves. He had enlisted in the militia at age 17yrs 7mnths, when 5ft 3.5inch tall, 31in chest, fresh complexion, brown eyes, brown hair. He ended military service on 30 July 1911; discharged on the termination of his first period of engagement, having been a Lance Corporal from 25 Oct 1906, Corporal from 7 Apr 1909, but having also been a Corporal on 6 Mar 1903, reduced to the ranks (Private) by court martial for absence after that. He had suffered a fracture of the 1st finger, left hand metacarpal bone 10 Jan 1902. Remains of records indicate the Warwickshire Constabulary confirmed he (as an army reservist), at 2:30pm on 7th August 1913 attempted to cut his throat was taken to the workhouse infirmary. He was recorded as suffering from some internal (text missing) and was not responsible for his actions. He began military service on 28 June 1916 recorded age 36yrs 2mths, having previously served 12years (recorded 12mths) with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (discharged as No. 6947, 26 Sep 1914 from reserve as medically unfit). Height 5ft 6 1/4 in, 35.5in expanded chest. He ended military service; having served Home 28 Jun 1916 - 4 Aug 1916, and been promoted Sergeant 1 Jul 1916 from Private. Discharged "not likely to become an efficient soldier (on medical grounds)".
