This is Gloucestershire 31 Aug 2010
POPULAR rugby stalwart Brian Glanville has passed away aged 73.
Born in Liskeard, Cornwall, in 1936, Brian moved to Gloucestershire in 1958 with his wife Jackie.
The couple met at Bicester while he was in the Forces, and had three children; Mark, Julie and Peter, and six grandchildren; Sam, Lisa, Ben, Beth, Harvey and Edward.
Brian was larger than life and a popular, familiar face around Gloucestershire in business and in sport.
A businessman in the locality for more than 45 years, he was managing director at Glanville Tyres Ltd with garages all over the city, most recently in Hempstead.
He joined Gloucester All Blues in 1958 as a formidable second row and went on to captain the side.
Later in life he served many years as president and chairman.
Passion
Brian's passion for the game took him into the world of refereeing where he was an RFU qualified referee with the Gloucestershire's Referees Society.
He went on to become fixture secretary, chairman and president, enjoying over twenty years of officiating rugby games at all levels across the county.
Brian, from Longlevens, even found time to be an official linesman at Gloucester Rugby Club and their Referees Liaison Officer during more than 25 years.
Managing director of Gloucester Rugby Ken Nottage, said: "I have now been at Gloucester Rugby for 11 seasons and Brian has been doing the job for those 11 years and before that.
"He was the co-ordinator of match officials on match days and he did that job superbly.
"He was a great asset to the club in that role and was someone who was completely respected by the board and members of the club.
"Everyone was sorry to hear the news and we will find it very difficult to replace that role."
Former Gloucester Rugby legend and rugby agent Mike Burton, said: "My wife Pat and I offer our condolences to Brian's family.
"I first met Brian when I was playing local rugby for Longlevens and he was a true giant of the game in the Gloucester area.
"I recall Christmas dinners and events when many former Gloucester players would get together and Brian was always there.
"He was a great person, a great personality and did so much for the game of rugby in the city.
"Gloucester will rarely be blessed by someone who loved the game and the people as much as Brian did.
"We have all lost a great community man and a good friend."
Colin Reeves from the Gloucester and District Referees Society, said: "He left his mark on local rugby in virtue of the North Gloucester Combination Cup which is now known as the Glanville Cup.
"He was very straight, very honest and hardworking.
"He did a lot for the society not just in regards to running it locally but also in making ties with other societies like Bristol
"He encouraged meetings between the two societies and other societies which hadn't been done before."
Former referee Matt Bayliss, was friends with Brian for more than 40 years.
He said: "He was very well known and was well respected in the county but even better still, he was a great guy."
The funeral is on Friday at 2.45pm Longlevens Holy Trinity Church followed by a cremation at Gloucester Crematorium.
All are welcome back to Gloucester RFC Kingsholm after the funeral to celebrate Brian's life.
