John Smale Glanville was born on 3 August 1854 at Buckland Monachorum, DEV, ENG; registered Tavistock.He married Fanny Squance, daughter of Charles Squance, on 11 September 1877 at St David, Exeter, DEV, ENG, (when age calculated as 23 years, 1 month and 8 days) registered Exeter. His age recorded 23, hers 27. Fathers named William Glanvill innkeeper, Charles Squance labourer. Her of East Teignmouth.
He married Louisa Squance, daughter of Charles Squance, circa November 1891 at Wellington registered, SOM, ENG, John Smale having previously been married to Louisa's now-deceased sister.
He died on 30 May 1931 at Sampford Arundel, SOM, ENG, (when age calculated as 76); recorded age 76, registered Wellington Somerset.

The funeral of the late Mr John Smale Glanville, formerly signalman at the Whiteball signal box, took place at Sampford Arundel church last Wednesday afternoon, the reverent P C Shore (vicar) officiating.
Mr Glanville had been employed by the old Bristol and Exeter railway company and the GWR for over 50 years. He first worked at Exeter, then at Burlescombe and for the last 40 years of his working life as signalman at Whiteball signal box.
He retired from work just over six years ago and had been failing in health for the past three years. For some time he was Chairman of the Parish Council. He leaves nine children and his wife behind with whom much sympathy is felt in their great loss.
Among those present was the following representing the great Western Railway Mr Vernon district inspector, Mr Brooks of Exeter, Mr Atwell, Burlescombe, Mr C Giles and Mr W Evans, Whiteball and Mr F Wyatt, Wellington and Mr J Saunders represented the parish council. The bearers who were members of the great Western Railway were Mr Coles, Ellis, Cudmore, Brooks, and Mitchell.
The family mourners at the funeral were Mrs Glanville (wife) five sons, four daughters, niece, nephew and two son-in-law's. On the coffin was inscribed John S Glanville died 30th of May 1931 aged 76 years. Among the beautiful floral tributes was one bearing the following inscription.
