TIME TO MAKE IT UP
A gig saddler named Ernest Luke Payne, of 66, Beacon Street, was summoned by his wife Emma Payne, living at 66, Prince Street, who sought a separation and maintenance order on the ground on her husband’s cruelty and desertion. – Mr J. Armstrong, on behalf of the complainant, said the parties were married in July, 1901, the defendant then being a widower with four children. After being married some two months defendant gave way to drink, and commence illtreating his wife. They went to live in Kimberley Road. On February11th he went home drunk, smashed some of the furniture, made some suggestions against his wife, and £1 a week to keep herself and five children. – In reply to defendant, complainant denied that she first assaulted her husband. She had the house in her name, because some of the furniture belonged to her, and she had heard that her husband was in debt. – Mary Ann Rhead, mother of complainant, corroborated her evidence. – Defendant said he was prepared to find his wife a home and take her back again. – The Bench adjourned the case for a month to see if the parties could not arrange to live together. She and William Cummings Glanville were associated circa 1909 by virtue of having a child together, but no marriage took place until the death of her first husband.
Emma and William Cummings Glanville had no further children.
