Kenneth E. Glanville
Kenneth E. Glanville, age 92, passed away at his home in Oakland on June 25. He was born in Livingston, California in September of 1925 to Oscar and Ethel Glanville. Ken and his older brother, George, grew up in Oakland, where Ken graduated from Oakland Tech High School.
After high school, Ken entered an aeronautics program in Oakland with Pan American Airways. During World War II, Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees as part of an agreement between the Navy and PanAm. When the contract between PanAm and the Navy concluded, Ken continued to serve his country in the Army through the conclusion of the war. After the war ended, Ken returned to Oakland and worked for PanAm for four decades beginning as a mechanic, then as a lead mechanic and finally as an inspector. Ken witnessed the evolution of aeronautics firsthand, from the post-war Sikorsky and Boeing "Clippers" to the Boeing 747.
In retirement, Ken was dedicated to health and physical fitness, and was a dutiful member of his health club.
Ken lived in the same house, meticulously kept, for more than 80 years, in the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood. Handy with tools and always willing to help, he was dearly loved and respected by all of his neighbors. He told wonderful stories about how he had seen the neighborhoods change over the years. He enjoyed wood working and photography. He filled photo albums with pictures and slides from his travels around the world, and of his beloved family.
Ken had a kind and generous heart, and was a role model for many. He will be missed by his nieces Mary and Barrie, his nephews Adam and Paul, and his great-nephews and -niece Ken, Kale, John and Kara, as well as his many friends and neighbors. A memorial is planned for September.
