     William Spray was born in 1809 at Phillack, CON, ENG.
     He married Elizabeth Glanville, daughter of John Glanville and Elizabeth Sampson, on 4 October 1831 at Phillack, CON, ENG, (when age calculated as 22 years) William's brother married Elizabeth's sister.
     He died in 1873.

     Master Mariner
He served in the "Auspicious" for some years having joined it in 1833 as its master. In 1834 he was joined by two of his brothers Phillips as mate and Samuel as cook. This vessel was engaged in the Hayle/South Wales trade. In 1845 he was the master of a ship registered at Scarborough. He obtained his master's certificate in 1851. though foreign-going masters were required to hold a certificate from 1845 this was not made comulsory for all until 1850. From 1855-65 William was the captain of the "Queen" a paddle steamer sailing between Hayle and Bristol and from 1867-8 of the Albion' a coaster. He held shares in the "Margaret" and the "Ocean". He was one of those responsible for getting a lifeboat stationed at Hayle in 1863.
     William and Elizabeth Glanville had 4 children between 1838 and 1847.
