John William Old was born on 4 December 1889. He grew up in White Bluff and Kingston Springs, Tennessee. In 1917, he filled out a WWI draft registration card. At that time, he was living in Cloverdale, Arizona, but listed his permanent address as White Bluff, Tennessee, and stated that he was single, with no dependents.

On 23 April 1918, he married Elizabeth Marian Glanville, 26. Marian was from England, and she was the daughter (or possibly stepdaughter) of Henry Glanville of Barnstable, but she had immigrated to the United States two years earlier, in 1916.

Just two and a half weeks after the marriage, on 10 May 1918, John W. Old was inducted into the U. S. Army at San Francisco. (He listed his birthplace as White Bluff and his age as 28 years and 5 months.) He was assigned to Company L-31 of the 21st Infantry and was sent overseas. He served until he was honorably discharged in September 1919.

By early 1923, John and Marian were living in St. Louis Missouri, where John worked as a streetcar conductor. John applied for a passport, stating that he and Marian planned to sail from New York on the Aquitania on 22 May 1923. Their destinations were England, Germany, and France; and the purposes of the trip were to visit relatives and to travel. (He also stated on the application that he was originally from White Bluff, Tennessee and that his father was Sam A. Olds of Virginia; and he listed his birth date, which matches the birth date on his draft registration card.) The passport was approved.

By July 1923, the trip was complete, and John William Old of White Bluff, Tennessee is on the passenger list of the Berengaria, sailing from Southampton back to New York. For his contact address in the United States, he listed his mother, Mrs. W. E. Jones of 127 12th Avenue South in Nashville. (His mother, Eliza Deal, had remarried after her first marriage to Sam old.) John’s wife Marian had intended to accompany him; but for some reason her return trip was postponed. Her name was struck through on the passenger list, and the purser noted that Mrs. Old did not sail.

That November, Marian’s sister Nora Irene Glanville sailed from England to America on the Berengaria. She stated that her final destination was her sister’s home in St. Louis. She also stated that her father was Henry Glanville of Land Rey, Barnstable.

In the 1930 census, John W. Old and Marion are living in St. Louis, along with John’s sister-in-law Nora Glanville. John’s occupation is “conductor,” Marion’s is “stenographer,” and Nora’s is “telephone operator.” There were no children living with them in 1930.

2nd Lt. Albert Edward Glanvill, R.G.A.,. Spec. Res.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. It having been necessary, on a certain occasion, to abandon a gun which had been put out of action by enemy fire, this officer, with a party of men, went back to the position during the night, though it was subjected to especially heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, and succeeded in withdrawing the gun. Later on in the operations, when all the detachment had been killed or wounded, he with some other officers kept one of the guns in action under heavy fire in order to save the relief detachment being called out before its time and losing some of the rest of which it was badly in need. He was largely responsible for maintaining the constant service of the guns, and his gallantry and devotion to duty set a fine example to his men.
On 21 May 1919 he applied to join the Mechanical Engineers, as a Managing Director of Messrs H Glanvill, 132 High Street, Bordesley, Birmingham.
