DEATH OF MR. SIMON GLANVILLE.
WELL-KNOWN MINE MANAGER.
The death of Mr. Simon Glanville creates another vacancy in the ranks of well-known Bendigo mine managers. Mr. Glanville had not enjoyed good health for several months, and acting on the advice of his medical attendants, he proceeded to Sorrento, hoping that the change would restore him to his former health. He was accompanied by his wife, and despite tender nursing and medical attention, he gradually became worse, and passed away yesterday at the Back Beach Palace. A native of Devonshire, the late Mr. Glanville was 69 years of age last December. He came to Victoria when 21 years of age, and was attracted to Tarnagulla by the gold discoveries there. From Tarnagulla Mr. Glanville came to Bendigo, and was shift boss at the Birds Reef when that mine was in the heyday of its prosperity. Later on he became manager of the Constellation mine at Eaglehawk, and after occupying that position for over three years he took up the management of the now defunct Hustler's Royal Reserve mine, in Pall Mall, which position he occupied for 23 years. Although the mine was not destined to become a large gold-producer, that circumstance did not detract from the skilful management of Mr. Glanville, who was recognised for the ability he displayed in the conduct of operations. After the Hustler's Royal Reserve Company ceased operations, Mr. Glanville proceeded to Broken Hill, and took charge of a property in which Bendigo investors had large interests. On his return to Blendigo he received the appointment of manager of Lansell's Proprietary Comet mine, which position he held for close on two years. On relinquishng that position through ill-health the Lansell Proprietary forwarded a letter of sympathy to him, and expressed appreciation of his services, The deceased gentleman was an ardent sportsman, and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends, who will sincerely regret to learn of his demise. Besides a widow, he leaves six sons. One of his sons is Mr. O. G. Glanville, Bendigo manager for Miller and Co. Proprietary Limited and is well known in mining and commercial circles.
The last rites in connection with the death of Mr. Simon Thomas Glanville were carried out Thursday, the funeral leaving the residence of his son, Mr. Oliver G. Glanville, 99 King-street, for the Bendigo Cemetery where his mortal remains were laid to rest in the Church of England portion. Many prominent citizens were present, also. a number of mining managers. Beautiful floral tributes were received, including domed immortelles from Lansells Pty. Ltd., the Comet mine, Miller and Co. Pty. Ltd., and Mr. H. Iser and family. The coffin was carried to the grave by Messrs. T. Ellis (manager: of the South Garden Guilly mine), J. Gill. (mianager of the Unity), G. Kingsley (manager of the Central Red White and Blue), and Mr. D. Kerr .The pall-bearers were Messrs. W. Jeffrey, C. Darby, J. Hedge, T. Ellis, C. W. Hyett and C. Foot. The Rev. J. H. Hewlett conducted the burial service. The funeral arrangements were under the personal supervision of Mr. T. Sayer, of Bridge street.
