Clearwater Man Dies As Car Hits Bridge
A 48 yr old Clearwater man John Turner Glanville, 1737 East Lagoon Circle, died in Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, at 3:15pm Monday from injuries received in an accident near the noon hour when the car he was driving struck an abutment on an U.S. 19 overpass north of Gulf to Bay Blvd.
The death of Glanville was attributed by hospital authorities to internal injuries pending an autopsy. He also received a broken leg and facial cuts. Rescuers worked for 45 minutes to free Glanville from beneath the twisted steering wheel of the car.
The accident was investigated by Trooper Ken Harsey of Florida Highway Patrol. Harsey said that Glanville was driving south on Gulf to Bay boulevard and he just passed a dumpt truck going in the same direction.
The car driven by Glanville hit a railing on the overpass and then crashed head-on into an abutment and bounced back into the path of the truck.
Harsey said the truck was almost stopped when it was struck and most of the damage to the car was from hitting the abutment of the overpass. Harsey stated that Glanville was rational and conscious during the effort to free him from the car.
Isaac Lawson Jr. 33, of 1009 North Madison Ave., Clearwater, was the driver of the truck. Harsey said the truck driver was blameless.
Mr Glanville moved to Clearwater two years ago from Mendham, N.J. He was a native of St. Louis, Mo. He was employed in the hearing aid department of Webb's City, St Petersburg, as a salesman.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth L. Glanville, of Clearwater, three sons, Lt John T Glanville Jr, US Navy, Monterey, Calif., Leonard Orin Glanville, US Air Force, Tatalum, Calif., and Paul Richardson Glanville Clearwater; a daughter Mrs. O.
