Shirley Jean Salts, 79, of Spooner, died peacefully on Sunday, April 8, 2007, at Evergreen Hospice Center near Seattle, Wash., after a swift battle with cancer.
Shirley was born on July 16, 1927, in Madison to Roy and Lillian (Engel) Glanville.
Raised south of Superior, she met James Garvey Salts while he was in port during World War II. They married on October 30, 1944, and lived in Carnot, Pa., near his hometown. They later moved to South Range and then to Spooner in the early 1960s.
Shirley had a wonderful love for children, raising her own family and then babysitting for several families after her own had grown. She remained a caregiver always. While primarily a mother and homemaker, she also worked as a cook at several establishments and as a hotel clerk.
Shirley was an active participant in several non-profit organizations including the Mental Health Association, American Cancer Society, and the Ladies Auxiliary.
Shirley was an avid gardener, gifted seamstress, fabulous cook, fun-loving mother and wife, and devoted friend. She was an adored grandmother and great-grandmother who treasured each for their individual gifts.
Shirley was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she enjoyed sharing the love of the Lord with many beloved congregational members.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, Gary; mother and father; sister, Maxine; brothers, Thomas and Ronald; granddaughters, Carrie Ann and Rachel; and grandson, James.
Shirley is survived by her children, Tom (Susan) of Phoenix, Ariz., Marilyn (Terry) Vraniak of Fairbanks, Alaska, Sherril (Doug) Dysart of Estacada, Ore., Patty Farb of Rhinelander, and Nancy Mallinak of Redmond, Wash; sister, Darlene (Wayne) Bernhardt, of Big Bend; and brother, Richard Glanville, of Superior; 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held on Saturday, April 14, at Scalzo-Taylor Funeral Home in Spooner. Les Jones and Pastor Mihail Baciu officiated. Music was provided by Grace Jones.
Interment followed at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
