Glanville Oaths

This page holds transcripts of Glanvilles appearing in records of takers of Oaths.

Devon & Exeter Oath Rolls

The majority of these were Loyalty Oaths, defined by the 1715 Oath Act. Their purpose was (in layman's terms) to ensure allegiance to the Crown and Protestantism. These were the times of threat to Monarchy and the still relatively new religion which replaced Catholicism.

Names of oath-takers and additional material was taken from Simon Dixon (ed.), "Devon and Exeter Oath Rolls, 1723", Friends of Devon's Archives (www.foda.org.uk/main/transcripts.htms, accessed 16 April 2007) and reproduced by permission of the editor and the Friends of Devon's Archives.

Serious researchers will of course wish to view that information to ensure they avoid any inadvertent transcription errors I have made; view the latest information published by Simon Dixon and read the additional information not contained on my site.
I am very grateful to Simon Dixon for allowing me to reproduce some of his material below.
