Birth, Marriage and Death information

Charles Leslie Glanville was born on 25 May 1915 in Norfolk City, VA, USA.
He married Bessie Lucille Dillard on 1 April 1937 in Elizabeth City, NC, USA, (when age calculated as 21.)
He died on 25 May 2008 in Chesapeake City, VA, USA, (when age calculated as 93); with obituary:
CHESAPEAKE - Charles L. Glanville of the 900 block of Cedar Road went home to be with the Lord on his 93rd birthday, May 25, 2008. Born in Norfolk, May 25, 1915, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Annie Glanville and brother to Elner Scruggs, Anna V. Lewis and Roger Glanville.
Charlie and Bessie lived in Norfolk where he was founder and president of Tidewater Steel Co. Inc. He was a very active member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norfolk where he became deacon emeritus and taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. Charlie and Bessie moved their church membership to Bayside Baptist Church in 2004, after moving to Virginia Beach where they enjoyed the fellowship of believers. In June 2007 they moved to Light House Pointe, an independent retirement complex, in the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake. The management and staff there have been a real blessing, providing an environment for a loving community. They joined Great Bridge Baptist Church where the members have been very supportive to both our parents, who have enjoyed their brief membership there.
A few months ago, when Charlie was told by doctors in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center that he had cancer, he told them that all of his faith and trust was in Jesus Christ and he would be satisfied with what ever Jesus wanted to do with his life. He didn't want to leave his sweet wife, Bessie, but his hope was in heaven. He felt very blessed for the life and family he had.
His other love was the Boy Scouts of America. He was president of the Tidewater Council; he received the Silver Beaver for his outstanding work in the council, Silver Antelope for his service to the region, and was National Chairman of Baptist in Scouting. He also received the "Good Shepard Award" for service in Baptist in Scouting along with the "Good Shepherd Emblem" (Silver Award) for 50 years of service to Baptist in Scouting. He was very proud of what was accomplished when he ran for Norfolk City Council in 1962. He and Paul Lipkin, Jack Wilkins, and Bill Shepherd ran for the Norfolk City Council. The group discovered that they had to run as independents, because they were not Byrd Democrats. They lost. The four candidates sued in the Virginia Supreme Court for "One man-One vote" and lost. They took their case to the United States Supreme Court. They won. What did that decision mean? The way voting was handled prior to this decision in Virginia, and for the rest of the country as well, was each county and city had one representative in their state legislature. With the change each person elected represented a specific number of voters, not a county or city. Norfolk now had more votes than Bath County. A two party system in Virginia was born.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Bessie Dillard Glanville; three children and their spouses, Fred Glanville and wife Pam, Allen Glanville and wife Leigh, and Jane Crotts and husband John; and a sister, Francis Franke. Charles and Bessie have nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Great Bridge Baptist Church. The Rev. John Crotts and the Rev. Jeffrey Crotts will officiate. The family will receive friends before the service at 10 a.m. The burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in his memory to Hope Haven Children's Home, Union Mission, or The Boy Scouts of America, Tidewater Council.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Great Bridge Chapel, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Friends are invited to send online condolences and sign the guest book at www.omanfh.com.
