ORONO — Dr. A. Douglas Glanville, the town’s unofficial historian, died Monday. He was 86.
A professor of psychology by trade, Glanville also was known in recent years as a fixture at municipal meetings. Despite the problems that come with age and ill health, Glanville was a consistent member of Town Council audiences over the years.
He also devoted considerable energy to his love of history, writing a weekly column on Old Town-Orono historical tidbits for the Penobscot Times.
Indeed, if a local newspaper ran a story on some historical subject, it often would be followed up by a letter from Glanville to the editor, offering even more detail and obscure facts about the issue.
Born Jan. 5, 1906, in Auburn, N.Y., Glanville received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1927 and a master’s degree in 1928 from the University of Illinois. He later returned to Cornell, earning his doctorate in 1932. He was a professor of psychology at the University of Maine from 1937 until his retirement in 1971.
A decade after arriving at the university, Glanville, then an associate professor of psychology, was named to head the school’s psychology department. Previously, he had been a Merrian Research Fellow at Cornell; Senior Research Fellow at the Training School, Vineland, N.J; and psychologist at the Delaware State Hospital and Mental Hygiene Clinic in Farnhurst, Del.
In 1963, he stepped down from heading the department to concentrate on teaching and research.
Glanville was co-founder of the Maine Psychological Association and was a member of the Orono Historical Society.
In addition to his wife, Blanche, Glanville is survived by his sons, Allan D. Glanville of Bangor and Bruce D. Glanville of Cooper, and numerous other relatives.
