Clarice E. DePetro - The Mining Journal - (March 25/2010)
MARQUETTE - Clarice E. DePetro, 97, of 1803 Presque Isle Ave., Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at her home in the loving care of her family and the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice.
Clarice was born March 1, 1913 in Ishpeming, a daughter of the late John and Lillian (Argall) Glanville. She was raised in Ishpeming and was a 1929 graduate of the Ishpeming High School. Following her marriage to Nicholas Phillip DePetro on Sept. 29, 1934 in St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, the couple settled in Marquette and began to establish their home and raise a family, which eventually included six children. Clarice was employed in the Food Service Department of Northern Michigan University for ten years, retiring in 1975. Clarice's family always came first, and she thoroughly enjoyed the family gatherings she hosted at her home throughout the years. These gatherings were frequent and often included 50 or more family members, requiring weeks of advance "ravioli and/or spaghetti making" sessions. In her earlier years she had enjoyed downhill skiing, riding horses, and ice skating. Her later years were involved with gardening, yardwork, cooking, and a passion for reading mystery novels. Following her retirement and the death of her husband in 1975, Clarice and friend, Cecile Bureau, enrolled in courses offered through the Women's Center at Northern Michigan University. There they sought the instruction and leadership necessary to help other women who were widowed. At a time when many would have lapsed into a quiet retirement, these two women were broadening their horizons to assist others. They were responsible for helping to form the Marquette Grief Support Group which functioned for over 14 years, helping people in all situations cope with their grief. Clarice was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and Altar Society, and was a former member of the Marquette Commission on Aging where she served for many years. She was also a former president of the retired school personnel and had served on the advisory board of UP Home Health and Hospice.
A devoted and loving mother, proud grandmother, and sister, she is survived by five daughters, Barbara (Philip) White, Kay (Gordy) LeDuc, Diane (Charles) Peltola, Mary DeMarse, and Patricia (Dan) Benson all of Marquette; a son, John (Joyce) DePetro of Marquette; grandchildren, Steven (Pam) White, Scott (Jill) White, Glen (Gayle) White, Laurie (Brian) Tuck, Mary Ellen Washburne, Peggy (Bryan) Butler, Richard Rogers, Elizabeth (Ed) Downey, Charles (Anje) Emmette, David (Cheryl) Emmette, Nicholas DePetro, Debra (Rich) Goupell, Kevin DeMarse, Nicole (Kurt) Taulbee, Melissa Benson, and Kim (William "Ricky") Custard; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois (Bob) Waters both of Ishpeming; a brother, Kenneth (Hyun) Glanville of Bonita, Calif; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Clarice was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son; and three sons-in-law, Richard Rogers, David Emmett, and Jerry DeMarse.
Friends may call at St. Michael Catholic Church on Saturday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday morning with Rev. Larry VanDamme and Rev. Ben Paris as concelebrants. A reception will follow. Spring burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Scott and Glen White, Kevin DeMarse, Rich Rogers, Dave and Chuck Emmette; honorary pallbearers will be Charles Peltola, Dan Benson, Gordy LeDuc, Phil White, and Nick DePetro.
The family would like to express special appreciation to Clarice's daughter-in-law, Joyce DePetro; granddaughter, Melissa Benson; niece, Clara Feltner; Lake Superior Hospice nurse, Linda Lake; and caregivers, Cheryl Sorelle, Connie Belmore, and Trudy Taskila for the many kindnesses extended to Clarice and her family over the years. Your dedication, your concern for her welfare, and the love you exhibited added greatly to her quality of life and her children are most grateful.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Lake Superior Hospice Association, 917 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855 or the Alzheimer's Association, 710 Chippewa Square, Marquette, MI 49855.
The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family, where condolences may be expressed online at www.fassbenderswanson.com.
