David Dean Glanville, age 66, of Grand Haven, died on March 31, 2008 in his home surrounded by his family. David was born in Hampton, IA, the son of Earl and Laura "Grace" Glanville on September 21, 1941. David went to Northern Iowa University on a wrestling scholarship earning his BA in Education. During his summer breaks from college, David fell in love with the Rocky Mountains. He worked many summers at Beaver's Dude Ranch near Fraser, Colorado as a head wrangler and farrier, a professional shoer of horses. Often he would hike into the mountains for a week at a time by himself communing with nature. After graduating from Northern Iowa, David taught in Colorado for three years. In 1965, he moved to Michigan and received his Masters in Education and specialist degree from Michigan State University. His continual thirst for knowledge led him to Western Michigan University to obtain his Doctorate degree. This natural born leader served as principal of Northeast Middle School, Central High School in Grand Rapids, and Wyoming Park High School. He played a crucial role in the extensive remodeling of Central High School in 1983. After 32 years in education, he retired, but continued to teach his children and many grandchildren life lessons. After one month of retirement, it was no surprise to his family that he began his second career as a financial planner. His integrity and yearning to do the right thing gained him many new friends and clients. In the last five years, he traveled with his wife Joyce, and spent time in Hawaii with his dear friends John and Marie Black. David had many talents and interests. He loved windsurfing, mountain biking, fishing, running, skiing in Colorado, gardening, golfing, playing the guitar, and hiking. Most of all, he enjoyed doing these activities with his children and grandchildren. David lived his life with honor, integrity, loyalty, generosity, patience and courage, teaching and sharing these qualities freely with love and humility. David exhibited these traits especially during the last month of his life. David is survived by the love of his life, Joyce; sons, Adam, Jason (Elaine), Ryan (Kristi); step children who he thought of as his own, Jerry Kimball (Kim), Steve Kimball (Tamra), Jeanne DeRoseau, and Rick Kimball (Jeanne); nineteen grandchildren; his sister, Mary Barnes; many nieces and nephews; his dog Sam; and many business colleagues and dear friends. Bishop Burretts Lief of Judge Hale. Page 11
The father of Serj Glanvil that eminent lawyer had a fair estate, which he intended to settle on his Eldest Brother, but he be a vicious young man & there appearing no hopes of his Recovery, he settle it on ye Sergeant, that was his second son. Upon his Death his eldest son finding that what he had before looked on, as the threatenings of an angry Father, was now but too certain, became melancholy & that by degrees forsught so great a Change on him, that what his father could not prevail which he lived, was now effecetd by ye serverity of his last Will so that is was now too late for him to change in hopes of an Estate that was gone from him. But the Sergeant his brother observing ye reality of the change resolved within himself what to do : so he called him with many of his friends together to a Feast & after other Dishes had been served up to ye Dinner he ordered one that was now covered to be set before his Brother, & desired him to uncover it, which he diong the Company was surprized to find it full of Writings. So he told them that he ws now to do, what he was sure his father would have done, if he had lived to see that happy change which they now all saw in his Brother : and therefore he freely restored to him the whole Estate. This is a great instance of a generous & just disposition which I mention of that worthy Sergeant, since he was so instrumental in the happy change that followed in ye course of Sir Matthew Hale's Life.
Ye John Glanvil Knt, was buried at Broad Hinton October the 3rd
