In those counties containing major centres of population such as Manchester in Lancashire and London in Middlesex, Surrey and Kent, the population is focussed in those centres.

The basis for this depiction is developed in the following sections of this webpage. The source material was the transcription of the 1881 census.

The population of England and Wales in 1881 was 25,974,439.

Analysis on 1881

It is now possible to take the total counts in each county, including all variants of the name and express the Glanville county populations as a percentage of the whole Glanville population, to determine in which county most Glanvilles were resident. This reveals more clearly still the Cornish and Devon basis for the name, with a London concentration too.

The population figures can also per expressed per 100,000 head of population to see the Glanville (and variant names) density within each county. This shows the London concentration to be a reflection of the high population in the capital and the true dominance of the surname in Cornwall and Devon.
